Short answer: no, Mauritius is not cold in July. It is winter in the southern hemisphere, but a tropical winter. Think of a nice late-spring day in Europe, with sunshine and a fresh breeze.
What the weather is really like
July is the coolest month of the year. On the coast, daytime temperatures are typically around 23 to 25°C, and it is usually sunny. Evenings and nights are cooler, around 17 to 19°C on the coast, and colder on the central plateau (Curepipe, Grand Bassin), where locals bring out the jackets.
The big difference is the wind. In winter the southeast trade winds blow steadily, so the east and south coasts can feel cool and the sea there gets choppy.
And the sea?
The sea is at its coolest, around 22 to 23°C. It feels fresh when you get in, but on a sunny afternoon most people swim happily. For long snorkelling sessions, a thin wetsuit top or rash vest helps.
Why July is actually a great month
- Hiking weather. It is the best time to climb Le Morne Brabant or walk in Black River Gorges without melting.
- No cyclones. Cyclone season is over.
- Kitesurfing. The steady wind makes Le Morne one of the best kite spots in the world at this time of year.
- Fewer mosquitoes than in the hot, humid summer.
The catch: July and August are European summer holidays, so flights from France and the UK are busier and pricier. Book early.
What to pack
- Swimsuits and sun cream (the sun is still strong)
- A light jumper or fleece for evenings
- A windproof jacket if you are staying on the east coast or going to the plateau
- Closed shoes for hikes
