Best beaches in Mauritius
12 beaches I love, from calm lagoons for children to wild cliffs where you only look.
Almost the whole island is ringed by a coral reef, so most beaches face a calm, warm lagoon. All beaches in Mauritius are public up to the high-tide line, even in front of hotels. Use the filters to find the right one for your day.

Tamarin
A wide bay at a river mouth, open to the swell, so it is a surf spot rather than a lagoon. Lovely at sunset; boats leave from here to see dolphins.

Le Morne
White sand below the Le Morne Brabant mountain, with a huge lagoon. Windy in winter, which makes it the island's kitesurfing spot.

Gris Gris
No reef here: the open ocean crashes on black cliffs. Come for the wild view and a walk, not for a swim, as currents are dangerous.

Frequently asked questions
Are beaches in Mauritius public?
Yes. By law the beach is public up to the high-tide line, even in front of a hotel. Hotels can control access through their land, so use a public access path or a public beach.
Which beach is best for children?
Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches, Belle Mare and Blue Bay have shallow, calm lagoon water and shade under the filao trees.
Where can I snorkel from the beach?
Blue Bay marine park is the best known; Trou aux Biches and Pereybère are good too. Always swim with a friend and stay inside the lagoon.
Where is the best sunset?
On the west coast: Flic en Flac, Tamarin and Le Morne face the sunset. In the north, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches also look west.
Can I swim at Gris Gris?
No. There is no reef at Gris Gris, the waves are strong and the currents are dangerous. Go for the view and a walk on the cliffs.
