Île aux Cerfs is the most famous islet in Mauritius, and probably the most photographed. So, is it worth it? Yes, if you go the right way.
What to expect
Île aux Cerfs sits in the lagoon off the east coast, near Trou d’Eau Douce. It has white sand, very clear shallow water, a few restaurants, water sports and a golf course.
The honest part: it is popular. The main landing beach can be busy, especially at weekends, on public holidays and in high season. Some people arrive expecting a deserted island and are disappointed.
Three ways to go
- Shuttle boat from the Trou d’Eau Douce area. The cheapest and most flexible option: you choose how long you stay.
- Speedboat tour. Quicker, and usually includes a stop at the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall and some snorkelling.
- Full-day catamaran cruise. The most relaxing option: sailing, snorkelling, a barbecue lunch on board and time on the island.

Who will love it
- Families with children (shallow, calm water)
- First-time visitors who want a classic lagoon day
- Anyone staying on the east coast, as it is close by
Who might skip it
- Travellers looking for empty, wild beaches: try the beaches near Le Morne or a trip to Rodrigues instead.
- People staying in the north who do not want a long drive: a northern islands catamaran is closer.
Our verdict
Go early, walk away from the crowd, and pick a calm, sunny day. Done like that, Île aux Cerfs is one of the best lagoon days in Mauritius.
